Learn About Joe May

Get To Know Joe
Joe May is a Birmingham native, former teacher, and community advocate with a lifelong drive to serve and speak up for what’s right. Raised by Patricia and Vietnam vet Attorney Edward E. May, he grew up in a home rooted in service and action—where standing up for others wasn’t optional, it was expected.
Joe’s Journey
As a former teacher of Economics, Government, and History, Joe has empowered countless young people with the tools to understand the systems that shape their lives. His dedication to the classroom earned him the title of Outstanding Teacher of the Year, and his leadership was nationally recognized when he was selected to join a fellowship program with the New York Stock Exchange.
Joe also co-founded a student-run investment club that taught the power of financial literacy and long-term planning as a means to break the cycle of generational poverty. After leaving the classroom, he continued his service to youth and families as Director of Development for Holy Family Cristo Rey High School, where he worked to expand resources and opportunities for students across Birmingham. Today, Joe is a champion of food justice and sustainability. He has led the creation of community gardens to increase access to healthy food in underserved neighborhoods and has expanded his family’s farm to support this mission. He is currently operating a growing chicken egg production enterprise to further strengthen local food systems and promote economic resilience in his community. Joe also holds a Juris Doctor degree and remains committed to using his education, experience, and voice to build a stronger, more equitable future for all.
Joe and his wife, Sidney, are proud parents of twin children, Jackson and Lauren, and their dog Nestle.
